Wageningen University (Netherlands)

Wageningen University, part of Wageningen UR, is the only university in the Netherlands that specifically focuses on the theme healthy food and living environment. We do so by working closely together with governments and the business community.

The research and education are based on a fundamental scientific approach and accordingly strongly geared toward application in practice. This is achieved through the close collaboration between different fields of expertise including both natural and social sciences. This allows Wageningen University to obtain an integrated approach of actual societal themes, such as climate change, competing claims on natural resources, unhealthy lifestyles and the continued pressure on our natural ironment.

The world is our working area. Researchers are active around the globe and the university hosts students from over 100 countries. The top quality of research at Wageningen University is crowned with the universitys position within the top 6 of the important citation indexes of its domain. In 2012 students ranked Wageningen as the best university in the Reference Guide for Higher Education in the Netherlands for the seventh year in a row.

Wageningen Campus
Erasmus Mundus doctoral students will be embedded within The Graduate School Production Ecology & Resource Conservation (PE&RC). PE&RC is a collaborative research and PhD training institution of Wageningen University encompassing approximately 125 scientific staff members from 20 research groups, 40 post-docs and 300 PhD candidates. The mission of PE&RC is Understanding the functioning of (agro-) ecosystems to design and enable the development of sustainable and multifunctional production and land use systems.

The ambition of PE&RC is to be at the international forefront of the scientific field it operates in, tackling both fundamental and societal relevant cutting-edge research. The research and education provide up-to-date and high-quality opportunities for PhD candidates to develop T-shaped skills (in depth knowledge on specific research issues and development of broad scientific overview, competences and skills). As such PE&RC provides a stimulating platform for scientists and PhD candidates to communicate and interact at various scales and levels. An external international peer review panel (2009) assessed the research and the teaching programmes of the PE&RC Graduate Programme to be of very good to excellent quality.
